GRAPHIC DESIGN

ART WITH FUNCTIONAL UTILITY

I think I fell into graphic design by accident. I remember when the first drawing tablets came out, and the early versions of photoshop. The internet was not as put together as it is today, so most of your frame of reference came from old drawing books and how-to guides, and things you saw just out in the real world.

Graphic design to me, is literally just art with a functional purpose. Everything done in design work has particular requirements and an overall end goal. From business cards, a company logo, branding, marketing, etc.

A lot of artists don't get this concept. Design work requires knowing composition, color theory, understanding of space, shapes, readability, and requires a demand of emotional response to it. If we were not even talking about design work, most artists would probably assume I was talking about art or photography.

Design also serves a larger purpose in the end. It is there to convey information, market products, create brand identity, and a way for people to see something, and know where it comes from.

Having design work stand out is a very important aspect to design. It needs to read well, It needs a sense of order, and represent the product or company behind it. I studied for years in design, from typography, ratios, serif construction, script design, calligraphy, palette control, logotype and logo mark, etc.

I not only breath graphic design everyday, but it is a very large part of my business in doing mix media for clients.

My style guides always have a hint of my artist ability in them, and my vast skillset in different mediums helps to make sure I can deliver more than just design work. This is why Hex Dot Media is not "Hex Dot Design".

Over the years, I've had many different clients. Everyone has their own needs, but most clients I have taken on were start ups or those who were continuing to upgrade their brand and business.

I have worked with multi billion dollar corporations, musicians, mom & pop type shops, fashion, clothing lines, along with blue collar industry & tradesman. No project is too big or small. Every business owner wants the best for what they are building or have built.

I think what differs between designers by a case by case, is their wants and needs when taking on clients. I try to keep my prices fair to my clients budget, and keep it consistent to that budget.

My rates do fluctuate based on those budgets obviously, With design, I not only love doing it, but I enjoy the satisfaction the client gets when they are happy.
