3D SCULPTURE
MY THREE DIMENSIONAL PROCESS
Man, 3D has come a long way. I remember the early days of learning blender in the 2.0 days and fumbling to just make a house. Not only has these tools become easier to use, but also have become more accessible.

One particular tool that I learned early on when it came out was Zbrush. An industry standard program for digital sculpting, and even at its high price value, it was paid, then you go. No subscriptions, no inflated value models, it was an Art program first, industry tool second in my opinion.

In 2024 (As I write this), it is still used for digital sculpting, but also in jewelery design, 3d printing, and used as a tool for all sorts of applicational usage.

For me, it was a way to bring my creative workflow from clay to the computer. Easily adjusting forms, blockouts, and changing on the fly, all without the loss of materials, or cost of polymer and clay. Digital sculpting became my way of sketching things out, and practicing. A spot to create whatever crazy idea I had.

The medium is so strange in my mind. I could probably sketch something out, get the 3 dimensional form in mind and run with it, but for me, sculpting it just feels easier, and comes more naturally for me.

I know a few 3d artists and digital sculptures who also feel this way.
Like most of my work in some of these mediums, often I get pieces that don't look finished, but are in my mind, finished.

I don't think there is a particular reason for it, after all, the daily sculpts I did each day would be a sculpt, vertex paint job, render, then into photoshop for any touch up or special flair I wanted to add to them.

Like all my art, I just sort of do it till I don't want to do it anymore. "Finished, not perfect" sort of mindset. Some are pretty complete though, like the cute robot, or the angler merfolk concept I did. While others, like this weird art piece to the right, was just "fucking around and finding out" mentality.

I think that is what I appreciate about the process, because I want to do it. so many times, its a white knuckle type push to just get working on things, while others, its just like a morning coffee. Just effortless to start.
